PROJECT CARE
Community Action to Reach the Elderly
This program is a community effort to enable a frail, elderly or disabled
person to remain in their homes and feel safe. It recognizes that what the
elderly and disabled value most of all is their independence. CARE
provides them with a safety net allowing them to remain independent.
Each year, all over the county, people are found who are seriously ill or
deceased who have been in that condition for days, and sometimes
weeks, with no one to help. Many accidents occur in the home no matter
our ages, but the frequency increases as our bodies become less mobile
and more fragile. Those with chronic medical conditions, such as
congestive heart failure, diabetes or emphysema have concerns about
who would come to help should a medical emergency occur and they are
unable to call for help.
Project CARE addresses these concerns and more. It is the effort of an
entire community to allow those who have achieved old age to live with
more dignity, more security and to know that there are many out there
who care.
Most older people and people with disabilities prefer to live
independently. Project CARE provides them with a safety net to allow
them to continue to live in their own homes within the community with a
greater sense of security and dignity.

A SPECIAL POEM FOR SENIOR CITIZENS!!
A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
and tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know.......
Is what tells each one
I C E
(In Case of Emergency)
A campaign encouraging people to enter an emergency contact
number in their mobile (cell) phone's memory under the heading
"ICE" (i.e. In Case of Emergency), has rapidly spread throughout
the world as a particular consequence of the terrorist attacks in
London.
Originally established as a nation-wide campaign in the United
Kingdom, ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a
designated relative or next-of-kin in an emergency situation. The
idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic
Bob Brotchie and was launched in May of this year. Bob, 41, who
has been a paramedic for 13 years, said:
"I was reflecting on some of the calls I've attended at the
roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone
contacts struggling for information on a shocked or injured
person. Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and
with ICE we'd know immediately who to contact and what
number to call. The person may even know their medical
history."
By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile (cell) phone will help the
rescue services quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be
vital in a life or death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do, and
it could easily help save your life. Why not put ICE in your phone now?
Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter the word 'ICE'
and the number of the person you wish to be contacted.
In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be
able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact
them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. For more than one contact
name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc It really could save your life, or put a loved
one's mind at rest.
Editor’s Note: Most newer regular phones, whether corded or
cordless have speed dial numbers which are listed either on the
phone unit itself or in an internal directory. Listing ICE numbers
in these as well could be helpful, especially if you live alone.
FYI - YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick
was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient
within 3 hours which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE - A true story
Susie is recovering at an incredible pace for someone with a massive
stroke -all because Sherry saw Susie stumble --that is the key that isn't
mentioned below - and then she asked Susie the 3 questions. So
simple --this literally saved Susie's life – Some angel sent it to Suzie's
friend and they did just what it said to do. Suzie failed all three so then
9-1-1 was called. Even though she had normal blood pressure
readings and it did not appear to be a stroke as she could converse to
some extent with the Paramedics they took her to the hospital right
away. Thank God for the sense to remember the “3" steps.
Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim
may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the
symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a
stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A
SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e .It is sunny out today) If he or
she has trouble with any of these
tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and
describe the symptoms to the
dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could
identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems,
researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.
They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke
Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this
test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and
prevent brain damage
