LANDSCAPE CORNER

Street and Sidewalk Weeds-

We are once again asking for your assistance in spraying weeds in the cracks of sidewalks and streets that are in the front and alongside your property.  As we've said before, the city no longer provides this service.  Our Landscape Co. can do the work, but it'll be an additional cost to the Association.  Please help us in saving money and maintaining an attractive appearance in Marbella.

Gardening Tip-

Distilled white vinegar is a very effective method of killing weeds that were mentioned in the above paragraph.  It takes a bit more saturation than weed killer, but it's not poison and it's low cost.

Greenbelt-

We have met with our Landscape Co. and discussed the free water audit that was done by the city late last year.  We are in the process of investigating whether we can take advantage of a rebate program for new "Smart" irrigation controllers. They could possibly make up for shortcomings of our present units.  We are also on the list for the City to check the water pressure at our water meters.  Consideration is still being given to removing grass and gradually creating a drought tolerant setting.  Cost is, of course, the major issue we have with that remedy.

Red apple ice plant-

It's spring and time to fertilize if you have a slope that's part of your property.  For fertilizing, a 15-15-15 blend is suggested.  In cases of yellow areas, an "ironite" fertilizer is recommended.  Red apple doesn't require a lot of water, but it does need some, especially right after fertilizing.  Water conservation aside, we do need to maintain the appearance of our properties.

MAILBOXES

As a reminder, residents are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their mailbox posts and mailboxes.  Appearance, once again has become an issue.  While black paint must be used, semi-gloss or gloss, rather than flat, seems to maintain it's appearance for a longer period of time.  Staples has numbers similar to the original size and appearance.  Posts must be dark brown and can be secured with a fresh application of concrete.  In some cases, a new brown post may be necessary.

AUDIT REPORT

Enclosed with the newsletter is a copy of the audited financial report for Marbella for the period ending 12/31/08.  We are required by law to have an independent audit done annually, with a copy to go to all owners.  If you have any questions about the audit, please contact the Board.

A NEW BENCH FOR THE GREENBELT????

A few months ago a resident suggested that the Board look at installing additional benches along the Greenbelt.  Unfortunately, the Association does not have the funds to do this work.  We put in an appeal to the residents in a previous newsletter looking for volunteers to spear-head a bench program using donations (which is how the current bench was acquired for the Greenbelt).

Board member Jim Coote has been gathering information on the types of benches that would be best suited for our area.  They would require little or no maintenance and be installed in such a way that they cannot be removed.

Right now he has some donations toward the cost of acquiring and installing one additional bench on the Greenbelt.  If you are interested in donating toward the bench or wish to assist Jim in this matter, please call him at (858) 673-0339.

BACKYARD FRUIT PROJECT

There is an organization that is accepting donations of fruit from people’s yards to give to needy families in our area.  The collection date is on May 21st.  If you are interested, please call Jane Radatz at (858) 485-5449.

ARCHITECTURAL REMINDER

No changes or modifications can be done to the outside of your house or to your yard without the prior written approval of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) at the Oaks North Community Center.  Architectural applications for changes can be picked up at the Center’s office.
